Afro-Brazilian Dance, Defense, and Resistance

Ithaca Capoeira Center

Who We Are

The Ithaca Capoeira Center (Ithaca Capoeira Angola Quintal) offers classes in Mindful Capoeira, here in Upstate and Central New York. Mindful Capoeira is a fitness and wellness practice that develops the whole body through a playful martial art hidden in flowing, dancelike movements.

Invented by enslaved Africans in Brazil, capoeira is a self-defense disguised as a dance. Influenced by a blend of dances from diverse African cultures, capoeira was practiced as a hidden, playful game to fool the slave owners.

Capoeira is internationally popular with women, men and children as an exciting and fulfilling way to stay fit. Capoeira is a blend of dance, self-defense, acrobatics, and music. It is one of the most complete workouts and fitness programs that develops strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, rhythm, agility, reflexes, endurance... and so much more. Capoeira develops mind, body, and spirit, and gets more enjoyable the longer one practices.

Professor Carcaju leads the local group under the supervision of Mestre Ombrinho (New York), in the lineage of Grand Master Nô (Salvador, Bahia, Brazil).

We welcome all students to practice and play with us.

We'd love to hear from you!
